Feb 2015 – Jersey Youth Chamber Orchestra
8th February 2015, 7pm, Jersey Arts Centre
The Spring 2015 JYCO session was a considerable collaboration, bringing the orchestra alongside visiting students from Chetham’s School of Music, the Victoria College Preparatory School Choir, the Beaulieu Chamber Choir, and PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year 2014 Lillian Garnier. The programme of music focussed on an exciting selection of French and British works, and the orchestra was conducted by the Director of Music at Chetham’s, Stephen Threlfall. Rehearsals began in the weekends leading up to the concert:
The orchestra focussed on Debussy’s Petite Suite for Chamber Orchestra, Faure’s Pavane (with the Beaulieu Chamber School Choir led by Gitte-Maj Donoghue), and Lindlay’s Ave Maria in a special orchestral arrangement written by local young composer Ruben Maric (with the Victoria College Preparatory School Choir, led by Jane Silvester). The visiting students from Chetham’s School of Music comprised a string quintet and oboe, and during their visit to the island they performed three separate schools concerts, in total performing to over five hundred children:
The concert itself took place on Sunday 8th February at the Jersey Arts Centre, and featured the combined choirs with the orchestra, and a solo recital given by Lillian Garnier, winner of the 2014 PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year Competition. There was barely a seat to spare in the theatre, and all the students involved did themselves proud! Our thanks go the Strasser Trust for their continued support of the Jersey Youth Chamber Orchestra, run through the partnership of the academy with the Jersey Music Service.
