About us

Based at the magnificent property of Chateau Vermont, the Jersey Academy of Music is open to children and young people of all ages, wherever they find themselves on their musical journey.  We also have a growing community of adult students – ranging from complete beginners learning theory to help their children, or taking up an instrument in retirement, to those looking to brush up their skills, play with others, or take that diploma they never finished when they were younger.

As well as one-to-one instrumental teaching, study at the Academy also incorporates theory, aural skills, chamber music and orchestral playing groups, as well as plenty of performance opportunitiesWe offer group sessions for our very youngest students (with the preschool group starting at just 18 months).  For secondary aged students, as well as tuition for theory exams up to grade 8, GCSE and A-level music classes and support are available.  JASTO (our main orchestra) and JASTO Junior also provide our students with the opportunity to explore orchestral repertoire and other large scale works.

Those who receive instrumental or vocal tuition elsewhere on the Island are also welcome to become part of the Academy to broaden their studies in other areas of music-making, including joining theory classes or ensembles – or taking part in our annual summer school. Links with other musical institutions both in the UK and further afield provide a wealth of inspiration, with regular visits from some of the country’s leading teachers and young musicians.

The Academy aims to give every young person the opportunity to achieve their musical potential, with our ethos focusing on both enjoyment and excellence.

Jersey Academy of Music Summer Course 2024

We have a handful of places left for our  2024 Academy Summer Course

We currently have a broad range of students signed up, in terms of age, level and instruments.

The JAM Summer Course is open to any young people aged 7 to 18 (school year 3+) who play a musical instrument or have singing lessons.  You don’t need to have taken any grade exams, but we suggest a minimum standard of Grade 1 to ensure that students are able to learn their music in time for the concerts.

The Summer Course is open to students who learn elsewhere, so if you have friends or family who might be interested please feel free to forward this to them.

This year’s highlights include:

  • A daytrip via rib to Sark with a performance for the Seigneur.
  • Laser combat at Creepy Valley (and a visit to Jump Jersey)
  • Water activities with Absolute Adventures
  • Workshops with the amazing violinist, looping artist and beatboxer extraordinaire Faz Shah (see his website here and Youtube here: Blinding Lights | The Weeknd | Faz Shah (youtube.com))
