All students are also involved in our regular programme of Projects and Events.
Instrumental Tuition
(Beginner – Advanced)
The Jersey Academy of Music’s instrumental tuition is based on one-to-one weekly lessons. Our expert Teaching Faculty offer tuition in strings, brass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, percussion, and piano, and the length of lesson is either 20, 30, 40, or 50+ minutes depending on age and level. Alongside the instrumental tuition we encourage all students to join our Musicianship Team either immediately before or immediately after their lesson to focus on theory and aural skills development. Each term there are various performing opportunities, and our regular programme of Projects and Events will provide inspiration throughout the year.
Musicianship Team
(from school year 3 upwards)
Led by various teachers supported by Student Teacher Assistants, our Musicianship Team operates every day. All students are encouraged to attend a 30mins session with the team either immediately before or immediately after their instrumental lesson, which focusses on theory and aural skills. Development in these areas is crucial to enable fluent progress on the instrument. This class will lead up to Grade 5 Theory, a compulsory examination for all students, at which point students then have the option of continuing with classes in Grade 6 and 7 theory, and one-to-one tuition for Grade 8 theory.
Fast-Track Theory
(30mins or 40mins)
We offer intensive one-to-one Theory tuition, which can be packaged together to an agreed number of lessons to lead towards the ABRSM Theory Examination. This is open to all, and is most popular for those students who need to take Grade 5 Theory in the space of a term in order to progress on to their Grade 6 Practical examination on their instrument.
Grade 6, 7 and 8 Theory
A weekly 50min group class to lead towards ABRSM Examinations in Grade 6, 7, and 8 Theory. These higher level theory grades are a very useful support for GCSE and A-Level music at school, as they cover the foundations of harmony (including figured-bass and part-writing) alongside melodic composition and musical analysis.
Pre-School and Key Stage One Music Classes
Suzuki Violin Department
(Beginner level onwards)
Led by Suzuki violin specialist Vanessa Moore, the Suzuki department is open to children from 4 years of age. Vocal Department
(Beginner – Advanced)
The Jersey Academy of Music’s vocal tuition is based on one-to-one weekly lessons. Vocal expert Nicki Kennedy will advise regarding the most suitable lesson duration depending on the age and ability of each student.
Alongside the instrumental tuition we encourage all students to join our Musicianship Team either immediately before or immediately after their lesson to focus on theory and aural skills development.
