‘Mikrokosmos’ Piano Project
2nd/3rd March 2019 Artwork Workshops, then Jersey Arts Centre concert on Sat 9th March 2019, 7pm.
Around 30 JAM pianists of all ages are participating in this exciting project. ‘Mikrokosmos’ (‘miniature worlds’) is a set of piano miniatures written by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok between 1926 and 1939. The pieces are divided into six volumes, progressing from Grade 1 level right through to post-Grade 8 level, and are all short in length and of an individualistic and quirky style, often inspired by folk music. Students will be learning their pieces gradually this term with the support of their piano teacher.
On Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd March all the students will participate in two Artwork Workshops, led by local artist Anna Shipley, in which they will create of a new piece of artwork based on their piano piece.
The following Sat 9th March will involve rehearsals at the Jersey Arts Centre in the afternoon, leading to a concert that evening at 7pm in which the students will perform their pieces with images of their artwork projected onto a giant screen above. Fascinating! The concert will also feature visiting brass students from Wells Cathedral School, who will be performing with JAM brass students led by Pippa Lumbard. This promises to be an interesting and diverse concert, and tickets are available from the Jersey Arts Centre Box Office (tel: 700444).
